Back in the early 1980s, Huong and De Van Tran, along with their three children, emigrated from Vietnam to New Orleans to chase the American dream. They opened Dong Phuong Bakery in 1982, and since then it’s become a cornerstone of The Big Easy’s thriving Vietnamese community and was named an “American Classic” by the James Beard Foundation in 2018. Huong’s baked goods are a thing of cultish devotion in New Orleans, including the French bread, which forms the foundation of bánh mì, the iconic Vietnamese sandwich.
